Frequently Asked Questions

Please find below the answers to questions that our Campervan and Motorhome hire team are often asked. If you have a question that isn’t covered here, on the relevant hire vehicle page or in our Terms and Conditions, please get in touch.
What does Certified Self Contained mean?
Self containment NZS 5465:2001 is the certification used to show that a campervan can contain water waste for up to 3 days. This includes water in the form of water supply (minimum of 4 litres per person for 3 days for the maximum number of people the campervan is licenced to carry), grey water (sink and shower water), and septic waste.

In detail, these are the features a campervan must meet to be self-contained.
Where can I hire a campervan from?
Road Runner Rentals has a camper hire location in Christchurch where we are based, and also collection/drop-off points in Auckland.

What payment options do you offer?
You can pay online using Windcave or Bank Deposit, or by phone with a Credit Card.

Bank Deposit: SWIFT Code - WPACNZ2W
Credit Card: Visa or Mastercard. Call us on 0800 800 708 (within New Zealand) or +642885000253 for international callers.

We require a Credit Card imprint for vehicle Pick-up.
Does the vehicle hire fee include fuel?
Our hire vehicles are provided with a full tank of fuel and must be returned to us with a full tank.
Is there a minimum age for hiring your vehicles?
Minimum hirers age is 18 years old for Freedom, Clubby, Queenie and HiWay Runner models.

Minimum age is 21 years old for 2 Berth Sprinter model and 25 years old for Explorer model

All Authorised Drivers must have a full valid driver’s licence appropriate for the vehicle, in English (or with an accurate English translation for the whole licence).

Restricted/probationary or equivalent licences cannot be accepted.
Who can drive your hire vehicles?
The hire vehicle can only be driven by Authorised Drivers, who are specified in the Rental Agreement upon collection of the vehicle. Additional Authorised Drivers may be added after this by our approval.

All Authorised Drivers must have a full valid driver’s licence appropriate for the vehicle, in English (or with an accurate English translation for the whole licence). Restricted/probationary (or equivalent) licences cannot be accepted.

All drivers must comply with clause 2 of our hire Terms & Conditions.
Do you charge for additional drivers?
We don't charge for additional drivers, but all drivers must be declared at the time of collection of the vehicle to be specified as an Authorised Driver.
I have a health condition, can I still drive your vehicles?
If you have a health condition that you declared when obtaining your full driver’s licence, and you comply with any conditions of that licence, you should be able to drive our hire vehicles.

For example, a person with diabetes-related sight issues that requires regular eye sight tests to keep their licence must comply with this.

Please contact us before you make a booking if you have any questions about a health condition that might affect your ability to drive.
Do I have to pay a deposit?
Yes - there is a 20% deposit which is required at the time of booking in order for you to receive a booking Confirmation

This deposit is non-refundable once your booking has been confirmed.
What is a Bond and how much is it?
This is an agreed amount which is paid by the Hirer on collection of the vehicle to cover any liability or additional costs that may occur. Refunded on return of the vehicle under the following conditions:

No damage to vehicle (or other vehicle or property)
The vehicle is returned with a full tank of petrol/diesel
All rubbish, toilet waste & waste water are emptied

Your bond excess will range from $0 to $4,000 depending on the insurance option you choose and the size of your vehicle.

A Security Bond is payable on pickup for Motorhomes and is refundable on drop-off less the Road User Charge for your vehicle.
What are Road User (RUC) Charges?
Anyone using New Zealand’s roads contributes towards their upkeep. Most road users pay levies when they buy fuel. Others, such as drivers of diesel vehicles pay through road user charges (RUC).

The RUC will be calculated and charged when you return the hire Vehicle, based on the kilometres travelled during the hire period. Please contact us if you would like to know the RUC rate for your chosen hire Vehicle.

What do I need to bring with me to collect a hire vehicle?

You will need the following:

  • Your full driver's licence (every Authorised Driver of the vehicle must provide this)
  • A credit card for charging the excess, if full insurance option is not chosen. For the security bond, (Motorhomes only)
Is there a cancellation fee?
All cancellations are subject to a $90 administration fee. If you cancel your confirmed booking:

Within 24 hours of booking: 100% refund

30+ days from the scheduled pickup date: 20% deposit is non refundable
11 - 30 days from the scheduled pickup date: 50% of the total gross rental cost will be charged.
10 days from the scheduled pickup date or no-show: 100% of the total gross rental cost will be charged.
What if I am late returning the vehicle?
On the return date, the first hour late is free; 

After this a half day hire fee applies. 

If the vehicle is returned after 4pm, a full day's hire fee will apply.
Can I return the hire vehicle early?
You can return your vehicle before your confirmed drop-off date/time, however we cannot provide a refund for this. 

Please notify us if you are dropping your vehicle off early.
Can I extend the hire period?
You may be able to extend the vehicle rental period, subject to the availability of the vehicle and any additional rental fee that applies.
Can I collect my hire vehicle after hours?
Normal pick-up hours are 9.00am - 4.00pm. After hours pick-up is available on request. A $90 fee will apply.
Can I change the hire vehicle?
On collection/pick-up you may be able to upgrade your vehicle subject to availability and the appropriate hire fee for that vehicle. You may also downgrade your hire vehicle but you will not be entitled to any refund.
Do you provide any assistance for breakdowns?
All Road Runner Rentals vehicles are registered with the Automobile Association (AA) for 24 hour roadside assistance. Phone AA Toll-Free 0800 734 543.

This service covers all Mechanical and Non-Mechanical breakdowns. Please refer to clause 16 (c) in our Terms and Conditions for more details.

Please note - if you require the AA Service to change a tyre for you a $140 fee will apply.
What happens if I have an accident?

In the event of any accident or incident involving the hire vehicle you must do the following:

  • notify us of the full circumstances as soon as practicable and within 24 hours of the event
  • notify the appropriate New Zealand Emergency Services by calling ‘111’ if the accident involves an injury
  • record full details of all parties, witnesses, and vehicles involved
  • prepare a written statement of the facts signed by all parties
  • obtain a copy of any relevant Police report

Can I reduce the Insurance Excess?

The Insurance Excess - also known as the Multi Vehicle Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) - can be reduced with a small additional daily fee as follows.

Hi Way Runner, Clubby & Queenie
25 years+          $2,000 excess or $25/day reduces excess to Zero
22 - 24 years    $2,500 excess or $30/day reduces excess to Zero
18 - 21 years     $3,000 excess or $35/day reduces excess to Zero

2 Berth Sprinter, Nomad & Explorer
25 years+          $4,000 excess or $45/day reduces excess to Zero
21-24 years      $4,000 excess or $55/day reduces excess to Zero

The full insurance options cover windscreen and tyre damage.

If the reduction option is not chosen, the excess is charged at time of pickup.

Please note: If Road Runner Rentals insurance reduction option is not chosen, the standard excess of up to $4,000, depending on vehicle model, is charged to a credit card on pickup. The hirer is responsible for any associated bank / credit card / exchange rate charges

What glass and tyre cover does the Insurance include?

The Zero excess Insurance option (or Windscreen and Tyre insurance only covers windscreens for chips or cracks and tyre damage/blow outs not caused by the intentional misuse of the vehicle or breaches of the Terms and Conditions.

Definitions

Start Date: The agreed day and time the hire vehicle and equipment will be collected from Road Runner Rentals by the Hirer.

Period/Term of Hire: The period of time between collection and return that the vehicle will be in the possession of the Hirer. Rental charges are calculated on per calendar day basis with the pickup date counted as the first day.

Terms and Conditions: The Terms and Conditions of hire - these are also contained in the Rental Agreement.

Vehicle: The campervan, motorhome or car rented by the Hirer and includes tyres, tools, accessories, and all other equipment, documents or additional hire items related to the Vehicle and any replacement or substitute Vehicle that may be provided.

Tips for making your travels more comfortable

Travel with soft / collapsible bags that can be easily stored inside the camper under the seats and lockers.
